The Accident

No one saw me fall.  How my feet got tangled up in a classic me move and sent me careening over the edge and into the bay.  I floated there like just another coconut bobbing along, until a jogger paused for breath and saw me tangled in the bits of seaweed and trash.

“Holy shit,” was all she could whisper over and over as she stared.  How long had I been there before she noticed me?  Time didn’t quite seem to matter—not anymore.

It didn’t hurt as much as you’d think, actually, when my body dashed against the rocks.  Maybe the shock of the cold water numbed me.  Maybe the impact as my head hit the jagged coral knocked me out first.  But it didn’t hurt much at all.  Not nearly as badly as the last time I saw you, anyway.  Maybe that was when my heart stopped, and the accident was when my body finally caught up.
